William Bullock was born in 1892 in Taunton. He was the son of Mrs Mary A. Bullock of Bradford-on-Tone. He joined the Army at Taunton on 8th October 1910 as a regular soldier in the 6th Dragoon Guards.

William got into serious trouble when on the 22nd January 1914 he Deserted His Majesty’s Service when he absented himself from 6th Dragoons at Canterbury until 29th January 1914. He was told to ready himself for embarkation for service abroad on 22nd January but immediately went AWOL with intent to avoid such embarkation. He received 56 days imprisonment with a release back to duty with the 6th Dragoons on 25th March 1914.

[THE GREAT WAR] A Terrible Time for William Bullock.

Just twelve days after the outbreak of WW1 William was shipped out to France as part of the BEF. He arrived on 16th August 1914. He was severely wounded on 17th November 1914 and shipped back to England on 18th November and remained in hospital at Bristol and convalescence for 202 days until a return to duty with 3rd Dragoons in France on 8th June 1915. At some time prior to 28th July 1916 he was probably seriously gassed during the Battle of the Somme. He contracted T.B. in France and was then again shipped back to England on 29th July 1916 where he was an inpatient at 2nd Western General Hospital Manchester.

He was later diagnosed with Caries of the Spine (caused by TB) and permanently discharged on 28th July 1917.

After what will have been a very debilitating illness, William sadly died at home at Gardener’s Hall Cottage, Bradford-on-Tone, Taunton on 24th September 1918 at the age of only 26. He is commemorated with honour at St Giles Churchyard in the village.
