The Scottish National Red Cross Hospital was organised in the first instance by the St Andrew’s Association and was funded by voluntary donations. The organisation of the hospital commenced in January 1900, the personnel eventually consisting of an officer in charge, 18 civil medical officers, 1 Quartermaster, 1 Warrant Officer, 2 secretaries, 35 nursing sisters of the Army Nursing Service Reserve, 45 first-class orderlies, all of whom were medical students, and 57 second-class orderlies, making a total of 160.
The first section arrived at Cape Town on 13 May 1900, and the hospital was opened for patients on 4 June, at Kroonstadt. Previous to that time however, the hospital staff had been employed on duty in the military hospitals at Bloemfontein and Kroonstadt. It remained during the whole period at Kroonstadt, and its equipment was handed over to the Government, when it ceased to exist as a private hospital, on 14 October 1900.

An Important Medical CBE & BMA Gold Medal for
“Distinguished Merit” (2003)
[BIOGRAPHY] 1938-
The late Dr Ian Gibb Bogle, MD CBE FRCGP past Chairman of the BMA council, was born in December 1938 and came from a long line of Liverpudlian general practitioners and was a well known and respected GP in his home town of Liverpool and was based for many years at the Priory Medical Centre.
Upon graduation, Ian joined his father, John Bogle, an ex-WW2 RAMC Doctor as a partner in 1962, in the practice that was founded by his grandfather, George Bogle, in 1911
George Thomson Bogle had started his medical career in South Africa during the Boer War with service as a medical orderly & student at the Scottish National Hospital in Cape Town. All this was of course long before the NHS was established.
Doctor Ian Bogle, was the third generational member of the Bogle family to become a Doctor and was a true Scouser, having been brought up and educated in Liverpool. He graduated from Liverpool University.
This CBE Group with a superb & seldom seen BMA Gold Medal for Distinguished Merit is a really excellent assembly.
All medals are totally unworn, in mint state and present in their original embossed leather, silk & velvet cases.
The CBE is accompanied by its original cased miniature.
The case to the BMA Gold Medal (Edinburgh: Hallmarked .375 Gold, “e” for 2004) is superbly named with a blocked gold leaf inscription:
