It’s not very often that we offer a renamed medal, but this particular Waterloo Medal which came to us recently represents such an attractive example that we feel it’s a very valid display piece just as a “type” medal. It has a long pedigree as it was originally researched back in 1975 for the famous coin & Medal dealer Bert Seaby.
Robert Cunningham is fully entitled to the Waterloo Medal and had quite clearly misplaced his original award at some early time and then went to some considerable trouble expense at that time to obtain another medal and then have a seriously talented engraver produce a superbly engraved replacement for him.
The engraving style is reminiscent of the Hunt & Roskell lettering seen on many medals and particularly on Officer Crimea medals.
In this condition, GVF+, Robert’s original medal would bring perhaps £2250, so we feel that a price of just £950 is a bargain for what is after all still a very high grade & greatly attractive Waterloo.
