[MEDAL DESCRIPTION]
In 1816 Duke Emillus Leopold Augustus decided to have a medal struck for presentation to the members of the foreign Legion of the Dutchy of Saxe-Gotha- Altenburg who had taken part in the Germany & Waterloo campaigns of 1814-15. The medals were in bronze at 42mm and those to officers were gilt all over.

A Very Rare and Seldom Seen SAXE-GOTHA-ALTENBURG WATERLOO MEDAL of 1816. This medal is one of the rarest classics of the Germanic Waterloo series. Still on its original ribbon. Those like the current example were given to NCO’s, were also 42mm and of bronze, but with gilt raised points. The reverse of this NCO’s medal shows the Altenburg Rose and ornamental border with gilt high points.

A Very Rare and Seldom Seen SAXE-GOTHA-ALTENBURG WATERLOO MEDAL of 1816. This medal is one of the rarest classics of the Germanic Waterloo series. Still on its original ribbon. A Very Rare and Seldom Seen SAXE-GOTHA-ALTENBURG WATERLOO MEDAL of 1816. This medal is one of the rarest classics of the Germanic Waterloo series. Still on its original ribbon. The obverse shows a gilt ducal crown and lettering in old German characters which reads:
“IM KAMPFE FUER DAS RECHT”
(In the struggle for right).

HERZOGOTH GOTHA-VND-ALTENBVRG MDCCCXIV: MDCCCXV.

This example of the medal has a ball shaped loop and flat ring for suspension from a dark green ribbon of 1” inch width with a border of black, through which gold is braided at intervals.

Other ranks received a plain bronze version.

You will travel a VERY long way before you’ll see another example of this medal, and in the last 47 years I think we’ve had just one other example and that was of the all bronze other ranks medal.

We’ve never offered another example of this gilt NCO’s award. And….this one is still on its original ribbon which is apparently now totally unobtainable.

[NOTE]
Having been just about absent from the market for many many years, a small group of these showed up at auction some few years back, in apparently EF+ condition (*all too good to be true! ) The authenticity of these was in our opinion,”highly dubious”. As such they each predictably sold for very small money.
