A Scarce & Desirable Two Clasp INDIAN GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL. With Service Papers. (BURMA 1885-7) (BURMA 1887-89)
To: 7888 Pte F. BROWNE. 1st Rifle Brigade (Formerly 2698 Pte 'Brown' of 17th Lancers) A SUPERB EF+ medal. Born in 1863 & previously worked as a Blacksmith in Hanley, Staffordshire, Browne joined the army in 1883 aged 20. He was clearly medically challenged by a serious case of acquired syphilis which led to deafness and his invaliding back to England. With copy roll & rare Full Copy Service Papers and 'alarming' medical history. Browne clearly never wore his medal (most probably issued postmortem) as syphilis of this severity was pretty much 99% terminal prior to the arrival of penicillin. The medal survives in practically mint state on it's original ribbon.£425
