53. Pte HENRY HAMMOND. 2nd (The Queen's Own) Regt. [BIOGRAPHY]Henry Hammond was born in the small hamlet of Bulton, near Chichester, Sussex in February 1828. He had previously been a farm labourer and at age 18 on the 11th February 1846 he enlisted into the 2nd foot. He also served in the second China War and is entitled to a two clasp medal & an LSGC. After 21 years, 6 months & 25 days service he was discharged at Chatham, Kent at his own request on 5th March 1867. He planned to reside in Bosham, near Chichester, Sussex. He was described on discharge as being 39 years of age , 5ft 9.75" tall with brown eyes, hazel hair and a fair complexion. He had spent 8 years 7 months in the Cape with another 7 months in China.
His other two medals were sold in c, 2001, so they are out there !!
This SA medal is somewhat polished with an original black tone and exhibits edge & surface contact marks from his two other medals. A nice item which is still on it's original ribbon.
