A MAGNIFICENT & VERY RARE ROYAL MINT "SPECIMEN
of the South Africa Medal of 1853.
Struck in ultra bold relief to PROOF standard for the official purposes of Royal and State approval, display and exhibition.
When producing coins, The Royal Mint generally strikes a small number of pre-production trials patterns and proofs (in various metals) of an upcoming new piece of currency. More unusually, they were also known to strike tiny numbers of trials, patterns and proofs of campaign and war medals...always un-named medallic strikes and without the normal suspender.
What we have here is a very rare high relief "Proof-Specimen' strike of the accepted design for the 1853 South Africa Medal.
An astonishing item with an ultra high relief bust & reverse detail. Unusually deeply stuck on proof surfaces on a very heavy planchette.
If you are a collector of the early South African medal series or the later and similar 'Zulu' medals, this will appeal to you as a medallic centrepiece.
In numismatic terms the medal grades Proof 65.
With original time developed multi-coloured tones over proof surfaces.
A Highly Desirable & Totally Unrepeatable Item.
