[BIOGRAPHY]George Simpson was born in Lancaster in 1815. Prior to enlistment into 35th Foot (Royal Sussex) at Burnley, Lancashire on 12th August 1833 aged 18 & 3 months he had been a clerk. He transferred to 90th Foot (Perthshire Vols) in January 1834 and deserted on 24th August. He rejoined on 26th September, was tried by district court martial and sentenced to two months imprisonment. In July 1838 he transferred to the 61st Foot (South Gloucesters) in which regiment he served until his discharge on 14th November 1853, by which time he had served 19 years and 320 days service of which 11 years and 10 months were spent abroad in Ceylon and Bengal.
