A Scarce and Greatly Desirable INDIAN MUTINY MEDAL
“ DEFENCE OF LUCKNOW”

George Clarke. 32nd (Cornwall) Light Infantry. AN ORIGINAL LUCKNOW DEFENDER
PTE GEORGE CLARKEDied of disease, almost certainly of Cholera, during the siege on 7th August 1857.

A Slight non-distracting edge bump at ‘RK’ of Clarke. The 32nd Cornwall Light Infantry were the main British regiment stationed at Lucknow at the start of the siege with 19 Officers & 517 other ranks being present.
*Interestingly, the naming protocol for Mutiny medals awarded to casualties & those who died of wounds or disease was clearly the same as with the Crimea medals in that the naming was much abbreviated and only the initial letters of the man’s Christian name & his unit were impressed onto the medal.
This saved the government considerable money on the naming process as they were charged “by the letter”
In this case, no rank shown, a letter “G” rather than GEORGE....and L.I. rather than LIGHT INf
