79th Foot Regt (The Cameron Highlanders)On the declaration of war the 79th Foot Regt sailed for the Crimea from Portsmouth to Scutari and as part of the highland division took part in the actions at Alma, Inkermann & Sebastopol. From the Crimea they sailed back to the UK and then to Ireland. On the receipt of the news of the sepoy insurrections in India the unit sailed from Ireland to Calcutta and took part in the Indian Mutiny with action at the Capture of Lucknow in 1858. Lt Allen, who is mentioned in the regimental history along with his fellow officers, left Kingstown. Ireland on 1st August 1857 on transports Louisiana & Tyburnia enroute to India. THE TYBURNIA He arrived at Point de Galle, Ceylon where he transhipped into HMS SIMOON. HMS SIMOON.The Simoon arrived in Calcutta on 17th November 1857 where he was billeted in the town hall which was then the biggest building in the city. The 79th were later engaged in the Battle of Bareilly and remained in India until returning to the UK in 1871.Group is suspended on an original silver three gate frame & pin and is contained in a neat Victorian 'Spink' 'prop-hang' mahogany display case with dedicated ivorine name plaque£1895
