James Bartram was a Church of England lad born in Elsham, Norfolk in 1855. Having previously worked as a labourer, he joined the Royal Artillery on 30th June 1876 at Newcastle on Tyne, age 21. He was a single man of 5ft 11" with grey eyes, sallow complexion & light brown hair.
He had only been in the army for exactly one year when he deserted on 1st July 1877, being caught on 18th July 1877. Seen awaiting trail he was given 8 weeks imprisonment. He deserted again on 28th July 1878 but did not rejoin his unit until 18th October, an absence of about 10 weeks. He was then tried & imprisoned again, this time for five and a half months. Due to his desertion he forfeited his good conduct pay and all former time of service (toward pension.)
He married a Sarah Entwhistle at Blackburn, Lancashire on 18th October 1884. He was transferred a couple of times between units in the R.A. with an eventual discharge after 12 years at Colchester on 29th June 1888 when he's seen settling in Accrington, Lancs.
