[BIOGRAPHY]
Henry Clements was a Welshman who was born in Newport in 1880. He attested into the Royal Garrison Artillery at Newport,Gwent on 17th February 1892 aged 19. He served with great distinction during the Boer War and participated in The Defence of Kimberley. His particular RGA section defended the now world famous 'Premier' diamond mine now the largest diamond mine in the world and owned by De Beers.

He served for exactly 12 years to the day and was discharged on 16th February 1904 in Pretoria, South Africa aged 29. Upon discharge he clearly returned to Wales almost immediately and purchased a pub called "The Oddfellows Inn" at Newport from the previous landlord Mr Edwin G. Dutfield. The purchase price of the pub (24th August 1904) including the goodwill of the business and the contents inventory was £350 ! with a further sum of £18/18s/9d for the wet & dry goods !

The pub is still there & has just been sold at £110,000

Interestingly we have the original 'legal bill of sale & stock itinerary' booklet which records the transfer of the business to Henry Clements.
