[BIOGRAPHY]
Edward Timperly was born in 1868 ( ) and died, aged only 34 presumably of disease, during his second tour of duty in Saugor India in May of 1902. The unit had been badly depleted by sickness during the TIRAH campaign with 253 men being sent home to England in December 1898. They received their marching orders for South Africa on 9th September 1899 and they set sail for Durban in HMS SUTLEJ on 21st September.
The unit fought at the Battle of ELANDSLAAGTE on 21/22nd October.
During the Defence of Ladysmith the first Devon's held the extreme South-East end of the town with their encampment being on Cemetery & Helpmakaar Hills.
