John Holcombe was born in Camberwell, Surrey in 1866 and joined the colours on 13th January 1885 at London.mhe had previously lived at home with his father, William Holcombe at 156 Sumner Road, Peckham. Prior to enlistment he had been a clerk. He married Anne Smith on 11th June 1885 at All Saints Church, Peckham. He was a Church of England lad of 5ft 4" tall with blue eyes and black hair. He served in Egypt for 1 year and 333 days between 28th July 1891 and 26th December 1892.
He was originally discharged on on 12th January 1897 after 4 years and 13 days service and is seen being added to the section D army reserve on 15th February 1897. He was called up on the 8th February 1900 for continued service with the Devons on South Africa where he served 29th February 1900 until 25th January 1902, a period of 1 year & 332 days.
A very unusual pair with a scarce clasp combination.
Comes complete with full service & medical papers.
Also with rare reserve papers.
Both medals EF, the QSA has an incredibly clear 'Shadow Date" Reverse.
