[BIOGRAPHY]
William Gill was born in Weymouth in 1867 and prior to joining the army at age 22 on 19th January 1889 at Windsor, he had worked as a Boatman.

He was 6ft tall, 159lbs , with fair complexion, blue eyes, fair hair, and of Church of England persuasion. He served in South Africa for 1 year & 58 days while taking part in several of the most pivotal engagements of the Boer War, for which service he was awarded his quite magnificent six clasp medal. He was later awarded his Edward VII Long Service & Good Conduct Medal.

During his service at Aldershot he badly damaged his hand when the horse he was watering took fright at the trough and dragged its halter chain through Gill’s fingers which removed all the skin. He was treated in hospital and made a full recovery. He was of sober, honest & respectable character and was discharged on 4th March 1907 after 18 years & 14 days service.

Complete with Attestation papers, medal roll, medical injury enquiry record and discharge papers.
