Who held up a German advance with a .303 rifle until reinforcements arrived.

FOR CONSPICUOUS GALLANTRY AND DEVOTION TO DUTY. THIS N.C.O. HAS DONE ESPECIALLY GOOD WORK WHILE SERVING WITH THE BATTERY. DURING AN ENEMY ADVANCE HE GOT A RIFLE AND AMMUNITION AND HELPED TO CHECK IT UNTIL THE ARRIVAL OF REINFORCEMENTS.
Tom Cordingly was from Irlam, near Manchester, Lancashire and before the war ran a Pawnbroker,Jewellery and general furniture shop at 596, Liverpool Road, Irlam. His home was just two blocks away at 17 Victoria Road, Irlam. He enlisted on 15th November 1914 in Manchester aged 30 and 7 months. He left Devonport on 15th December 1915 and arrived at Port Said, Egypt on 29th December. He served in Egypt until 8th April 1916 when he left Alexandria for France with an arrival at Marseille on 16th April 1916.
AN EXCELLENT D.C.M. TO A LOCAL LANCASHIRE LAD WHO SERVED WITH GREAT GALLANTRY AND SURVIVED THE WAR .HE WAS POSTED TO AN OFFICER TRAING UNIT IN LATE 1918 BUT THE WAR ENDED BEFORE HE COULD TAKE UP A COMMISSION AND HE RETURNED TO HIS PAWNBROKING BUSINESS IN IRLAM.
