The 2nd Essex Regiment landed at Le Havre 24th August 1914.
Sgt Cooper's DCM was gazetted on 17th April 1918.
CITATION (London Gazette 17th April 1918)
"For Conspicuous Gallantry and Devotion to Duty. Since the commencement of the campaign as Transport Sergeant he has displayed the most tireless energy and has by day and night performed his duties with cheerfulness and ability. He has always remained with his transport under heavy shell fire and his coolness has been an example to all"
