[BIOGRAPHY]
Layland Williams was born in 1893 in Paignton, Devon and his papers confirm an address of 16 Langs Road Paignton, Devon. His papers record his joining of the R.A. as a gunner on 14th September 1916, with an early transfer to the Yorkshire Regt as Pte 42501 on 10th January 1917. Some time later on 26th July 1918 he was transferred as Pte 34588 to the 2/4tn West Riding Regt with whom in September 1918 he won his Distinguished Conduct Medal. He was quite badly wounded on 4th November 1918 at Abbeville when he sustained a bullet (possible gas shell fragment) wound to the forehead above his right eye. He was still having trouble with pains in his head when he is seen making a statement on 4th February 1919 with a further claim for hernia pain from an operation carried out after a rupture caused by. 'Heavy Marching".

"For conspicuous gallantry in operations near Havrincourt between 12th and 15th September 1918. This man, who was the only Lewis
Gunner left of his team, went forward with his gun down a trench and fired on a party of the enemy who were attacking another part of our line. He killed two and the remainder surrendered"
