Edmund G.Gray was born in Ayr, Scotland in 1890. Prior to enlistment into the Territorial Reserve on 13th June 1910 he was a single 19 year old Student (presumably medical). He entered theatre 2b "Balkans" on 7th July 1915. 52nd CCS was based in German East Africa at Mingoyo, Tanzania.
(TFEM numbered '322001'...With the Ultra Low Number "2", on all the other awards we think that this group proves that nobody was ever issued with the Number 1.)
[D.C.M. CITATION L.G. 3rd of March 1918] 'For conspicuous devotion to duty. He carried out his work with marked ability and overcame great difficulties in obtaining supplies to feed our sick and wounded and to transport them to the advanced rest stations'. [M.I.D. London Gazette 2nd August 1918]
