London Gazette. 27th June 1918]“The award was clearly very well earned by this brave medic’ and was almost certainly awarded for the constant treatment and stretcher evacuation of battlefield casualties under heavy fire” [BIOGRAPHY] William Lawson was born in Manchester in 1894 the son of Mrs Elizabeth Lawson of 4 Gaspard Street, Rusholme Manchester. He had originally enlisted into the 1/2nd East Lancashire RAMC(TF) in about 1910 at the age of 18. He was re-embodied on 5th August 1914. At the time of his official re-enlistment on 28th July 1916 at Manchester Town Hall, he declared 5 years & 77 days service with the 1/2nd as No.123 (Time expired April 1916).
He initially served in Theatre (3) EGYPT leaving England on 10th September 1916 with service there from 26th September 1914 to 21st March 1916.
He had become time expired on 8th February 1916 and was at Shallufa for transfer back to England.
He arrived in Alexandria on 21st March 1916 in “Empress of Britain” from Mudros and was shipped back to the U.K.
He was recalled yet again for service on 28th July 1916 with a departure for France on 12th May 1917 and arrival at Le Havre on 13th. He joined the Cyclists Base Depot at Rouen on 17th.
He was first wounded in action on 23rd August 1917 and again on 24th April 1918 (wounded in right thigh).
He served in France from 12th May 1917 to 28th April 1918 and again 15th October 1918 to 8th March 1919. He finally returned home on 9th March 1919 and was demobed on 31st March 1920.
The medals are all lovely EF on original ribbons. The group comes with copy MIC and several interesting, greatly comprehensive and rarely surviving copy attestation & service papers.
