[BIOGRAPHY] JOSEPH RHODES RENTON. 1887-1952 (65)
Joseph Rhodes Renton was born on 25th October 1887 (Balaclava Day !) and enlisted into The 1st Royal Highlanders (The Black Watch) as ‘Number 7’ at Fort George on 30th October 1904 at age 17.
The unit’s numbering system having reached 9,999 was restarted at “1” in October 1904 with Joseph being the 7th recruit of the new series.
Having been in service for 10 years, Joseph had become a senior NCO and upon the declaration of war he left for France on 12th August 1914 just eight days after the declaration of war. His channel crossing was one of the earliest of the war. He was serving as a Colour Quarter Master Sergeant with a landing at Le Havre on 13th August.
He was awarded his Meritorious Service Medal on 18th October 1916, was Mentioned in Despatches on 4th January 1917 and became the Regimental Quarter Master Sgt on 5th November 1917.
He received his Long Service and Good Conduct medal in 1923.
Most unusually during WW2 he was commissioned into the R.A.F. as 111301 Flt/Lt J.R. RENTON, and later served as a VR(T) officer in the Air Training Corps for which he received the Cadet Services Medal (GVI).
He Died on 26th December (Boxing Day) 1952 age 65.
This is without doubt a totally unique combination to a man who’s service career ran from his enlistment as a private in the army from 30th October 1904 via a commission in the Royal Air Force in World War II , and service in the Air Training Corps until the early 1950’s.
A very lovely group & a unique combination.
