George Henry Mallett was born on 24th November 1881 in DOCKING, near HUNSTANTON in NORFOLK, to George Henry Mallet (Snr) a Schoolmaster & Annie Eliza Mallet. His twin brother was Robert Henry Mallet who also initially served in the Great War as a private in the Norfolk Yeomanry, later becoming an officer in Egypt. In 1891 the family were living at “The Schoolhouse” Hunstanton with three other children. Pre-war, in about 1900 both George & his brother moved to London at age 19 and both became insurance clerks with the Prudential and lived in digs at Pinfold Road, Streatham. At age 26 George Married Mabel Rose Humm on 7th March 1908 at St Leonard’s Church, Streatham [WAR DIARY CITATION]. 1st MM (L.G. 24th Jan 1919) “Lance Cpl G.H. MALLETT” M.M. “Finding the enemy bombing up a trench on his flank, hurriedly organised a party and gathered all the bombs he could find. Though the men were badly shaken and disorganised through loss of nearly all their company officers and NCO’s, he succeeded in driving the enemy off, inflicting heavy casualties and saving his flank from being driven in”. [2nd MILITARY MEDAL] (L.G. 17th June 1919) Advance to victory, Attack from Ronssoy. A really excellent “Double MM” won by “THE MAN FROM THE PRU’. A man of immense and immediate bravery who one minute is concerned with writing up insurance policies in a London office in Holborn & astonishingly is next seen carrying out multiple acts of great gallantry while fighting the Germans in France during the Great War. Post war, George returned work for The Pru’ and by 1939 is seen living with his wife Mabel in Guildford. He was an ARP warden for the Pru’ at Holborn during the first two years of WW2. He died of natural causes on 14th February 1941. [SUMMARY] You’ll probably never look at your local insurance agent in the same way again.
