Private Pennie swam 200 yds and saved the life of Private Thomas Allen off the Navro Islands.
On 6th day of January 1916, Private Thomas Allen of the Highland Light Infantry, in order not to be carried out to sea, jumped from a raft off the Navro Islands in the Aegean Sea. Private Pennie, also of the Highland Light Infantry,jumped into the sea and swam out 200 yards and succeeded in bringing Private Allen back to safety. A superb rescue considering he had spent 6 months in appalling conditions on the Gallipoli Peninsular. The 1/5th City of Glasgow battalion were involved with Gallipoili and landed there on 3rd July 1915. On 8th January 1916 they left Gallipoli for Mudros. February 1916 to Egypt. 11th-17th April 1918 Alexandra to Marseilles. 11th November 1918 in Belgium.
