5th (Royal Irish) Lancers (HISTORY)

In March 1914, the regiment was encamped at Curragh, Ireland, as part of 3rd Cavalry Brigade, which was mistakenly informed that its officers would have to impose home rule on Northern Ireland or resign, in what became known as the Curragh Incident. Many of the brigade's officers were Irish Protestants and so over 80 per cent of them initially offered to resign before the mistake was corrected. This correction also allowed the 5th Lancers to sail for the Western Front five months later.

Joseph Tynan left Dublin on 15th August arrived in France (Le Havre) on 17th August 1914 and as such was one of the very earliest cavalry entrants. At the end of August they were involved in the Battle of Mons where they fought a strong rearguard action against the advancing German Army, being the last unit to leave the town. In October they were involved in the Battle of Messines and then in the first Battle of Ypres. In the 1918 action it suffered sad distinction of suffering the very last British casualty of the war, Private George Ellison, who was shot by a sniper at 09:30am on 11th November 1918....just 90 minutes before the Armistice came into effect at 11:00am ! As fellow pre-war entrants who had fought the entire war together Ellison & Tynan surely must have known each other.

As a survivor of just about every battle imaginable and some of the bloodiest fighting of the war he truly did have the Luck of the Irish on his side. Joseph was a truly rare example of a surviving Irish Cavalry "Old Contemptible" pre-war entrant.

At wars end, the 5th Lancers were deployed to Risalpur in India, where they were disbanded in 1921. A single squadron of the regiment was re-raised the following year to merge with the 16th Queen's Lancers to form the 16th/5th Lancers.
