[BIOGRAPHY]
Frederick David Gaston was born at Framfield near Ukfield in Sussex in 1877. Prior to enlistment into the RFA he had been a Harnessmaker who was living at home with his parents in Seaford Sussex. He enlisted on 12th March 1895 at Chichester. He completed a collar makers course with the army on 14th April 1897. The unit was posted to South Africa in 1899 and took a full part in the Boer War with battle service at WITTERBERGEN.
He was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 10.09.01) and was further awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (London Gazette 27.09.01) clearly for the same action. ( research continues )
He was married in Coventry registry office on 12th February 1899 to Florence Eliza Fathan ( military marriage certificate included).
He was discharged on 10th March 1907 having completed a standard 12 year engagement.

Here we see an excellent photo of Sgt F.D.Gaston D.C.M. standing centre left in front of the gun carriage wheel (clearly wearing his DCM medal ribbon) surrounded by his junior N.C.O's & the men of the 77th Battery who fought and virtually saved the day at the infamously disasterous Battle of Stormberg, 9th/10th December 1899.
