[BIOGRAPHY]
Arthur Christopher Vidal Gosset was born on 6th December 1893 and served for 3 years with the Marlborough College OTC and the Cambridge University OTC before receiving a commission into the Ox & Bucks Light Infantry. Prior to the war he had been registered at Cambridge University in October 1913. He landed in France on 22nd July 1915 and was perhaps one of the luckiest officers in the British Army.
He was quite seriously wounded on 8th July 1916 during the first few days of the Battle of the Somme when he was shot in the right hand, breaking his 5th meta carpal bone.He left for treatment in England on 10th July and rejoined his unit nine weeks later on 17th September. [THE ACTION AT TRONES WOOD]He was again seriously (and almost fatally) wounded on 7th October when fighting at Trones Wood (while clearing the enemy from Rainbow Trench with 12th Rifle Brigade). He was hit by a rifle bullet which passed from left to right, through the front of his neck just above his larynx and then re-entered his front right shoulder and passed out at back escaping through the postero external angle of right shoulder behind the point of the shoulder blade causing a wound somewhat larger than a five shilling piece.
He was again evacuated to England on 14th October 1916.
Arthur was honourably discharged on 19th October 1917 when he is seen being awarded the silver war badge at Cambridge (Cairns College).
He continued his medical training during the remainder of the war with a graduation in 1919, receiving a medical doctorate M.R.C.S. & L.R.C.P. (London 1920). He later practiced as an operative surgeon at the famous Addenbrooke's hospital, Cambridge.
This unusually wounded officer's group comes complete with many papers including colour copies of MIC & medal rolls etc and copies of his two medical board reports with full description of his wounds.
