Sam was from HINCKLEY and is COMMEMORATED ON THE HINCKLEY WAR MEMORIAL.
Includes a typed copy of the war diary which contains an excellent narrative of the action where Samuel and many other members of his unit were lost.The diary report relates that the men were fighting in mud that was "over their knees." This action also started just before midnight and was fought in totally atrocious conditions under heavy shell fire while continuing in the blackness of the early hours of the morning. Many men were killed or missing and like young Sammy Johnson, many were never found.
