A Scarce CASUALTY 1914 Star & Bar Trio. To: Pte. 10804. J. PRITCHARD. 1st WORCESTERSHIRE REGt. ('E' on Star) KILLED IN ACTION 24th May 1916. Aged 25
John Pritchard has two Medal Index Cards, the 1914 Star is on it's own card with his initial shown as "E" which agrees with the impressment on the star itself. His second MIC is to J(ohn) Pritchard and has the details of his pair which carry "J" Pritchard. His service number '10804' is constant on both cards and on all three medals. We believe his name was John Edward Pritchard, but was known at Eddie as his father was John.Born in Smethwick, Staffs. From Handsworth. Birmingham. He joined the army in mid 1907 as a regular. He was with the regiment in Egypt at the outbreak of war in August 1914. He and his unit arrived in France at Le Havre on 6th November 1914. His death on 24th May 1916 was probably at the hands of a German sniper or caused by a lose artillery shot as his death does not immediately coincide with any of the main set piece battles. He was the son of John & Mary Anne Pritchard of 44 Mount Pleasant. Rookery Road, Handsworth, Birmingham and is remembered with eternal honour at Barin Cemetery, France. Plot 1B.61.His grave epitaph was chosen by his mother as : "UNTIL THE DAY DAWNS"£445
