SEVERELY WOUNDED 30th July 1916 (Battle of The Somme)

KILLED IN ACTION Monday 25th March 1918

Includes a well researched folder of information and photographs.

Private Weeks was clearly an unusual and particularly brave man as he was blown up by a high explosive shell and left for dead on the Somme Battlefield. After being in no man’s land for a long time he was finally rescued with multiple and serious wounds. After returning to England he was hospitalised in a very bad state but against all the odds he fought his way back to health. Looking at his serial numbers it is fairly obvious that the Army considered him so badly wounded in 1916 that he was discharged as No.3048 and re-mustered as No.200817, when he returned yet again, to his original unit in France. Private Charles Weeks is quoted as saying that of all his many wounds he “only considered 11 of them to be serious” !!  He was sadly killed during his second tour of duty on 25th March 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. *Neither did he receive a gallantry award, which is clearly a serious oversight in this man’s case.

An Incredible Story of real valor and fortitude
