[BIOGRAPHY]
Henry Richard DODWELL was the son of James Francis and Emmeline Jane DODWELL of Carlton Kings. He was born in Chalton Kings in 1887 and was christened at The Holy Apostles Church in Park Street on 6th March 1887. His farther was a labourer. The 1911 census shows him living at 24 Upper Norwood Street, Cheltenham with his wife Eliza and one year old daughter Phyillis. He was a boot repairer. At the time of his enlistment into the 10th Gloucesters in November 1914 he was resident at 18 Elwyn Terrace, Fairfield Street, Cheltenham. He arrived in France on 9th August 1915 and was transferred to 8th Bn. which in the last weeks of the war was engaged in daily attacks on the retreating German army near GIVENCHY. During one of these attacks he was seriously wounded and died of his wounds on 12th September 1918 at a casualty clearing station.
He is buried & commemorated with eternal honour at LAPUGNOY MILITARY CEMETERY. His grave inscription reads:
"SADLY MISSED BY HIS LOVING WIFE AND CHILDREN" An emotive group to a family man lost in the Great War. Medals & Plaque in EF with original ribbons
