TERRITORIAL FORCE WAR MEDAL.(CASUALTY)
(One of only 6,460 Artillery TFWM singles)
To:
863. GNR. R. DAW. R.A. (From Paignton, Devon)
& Gunner 865359 RALPH BERNEY PARNELL DAW.
"D" Bty. 82nd Bde. Royal Field Artillery.
A VERY late Territorial casualty just 16 days before the armistice.
Killed in Action. 26th October 1918. Aged 27
Ralph is buried at Montay Communal Cemetery, France, with a headstone dedication of:
"GOD GRANT HIM ETERNAL REST" [NOTE]:
We think that the circumstances of this soldier's death was linked to a direct hit by an enemy artillery shell on his gun. Killed on the same day & buried in the same cemetery are three other gunners who we think formed a single gun crew with Ralph Daw.
The other men were:
Gnr A. HOWSE R.G.A. 355th Siege Battery
Gnr W. STANWORTH R.G.A. 355th Siege Battery
Gnr G. RAWLES R.G.A. 372nd Siege Battery
Along with Gnr Ralph Daw this would be a standard four man gun crew for a medium artillery piece. There were also several other line regiment & infantry men killed on 23rd October who rest in this cemetery.
Also entitled to a War & Victory Medal Pair. An interesting & rare casualty single.
This casualty is listed on CWG under 865359 RALPH BERNEY PARNELL DAW..
