[BIOGRAPHY]
Edward Addison was a resident of Bamber Bridge, Preston, Lancashire and prior to his enlistment in late 1914 lived at 24 Sergeant Street with his wife Mary and one child. (The address still exists) After about a year's training he entered France with 6th SWB on 24th September 1915. He took part in two and a half years of hard fighting in the western front.
He was severely wounded at the Battle of Lys in the well documented German attack on 11th April and died of his wounds at 11th Casualty Clearing Station at 'Godewaersvelde' on 12th April 1918.
He is commemorated with eternal honour at Godewaersvelde
British Cemetery, plot 1.Q.4.
His widow placed the following epitaph in the Lancashire Daily Post of Friday, May 3rd 1918:
DIED OF WOUNDS. ADDISON.- Corpl. EDWARD ADDISON,Died of Wounds April 12th 1918.
"No pen can write, no tongue can tell,
Our sad and bitter loss;
But Thou, O Lord, can help us
To bear our heavy cross.
The hardest part has yet to come
When the heroes do return;
We'll miss amongst the cheering throng
The one who'll not return".
