Note:
It was originally intended that full sized service clasps would be produced for fitting to the British Silver War Medal, but this idea was abandoned due to sheer cost. However, a few (mainly naval) miniature clasps were produced, three of which are seen on this rare mini-war medal.
[FAMILY BIOGRAPHY]
The two Watson brothers were born in Banbury, Oxfordshire. George in 1893 and Walter on 14th September 1899. They were the sons of Ellen Watson of 4 Southam Road, Banbury. George entered France on 29th March 1915 followed by by younger brother Walter, who enlisted on 17th September 1917 and who took part in the famous ZEEBRUGGE RAID on 23rd April 1918 , while serving in HMS VINDICTIVE.
Walter who was previously a Railway Engine cleaner was demobilised on 25th September 1919.
