[ABOUT WILLIAM RILEY] William Riley was a classic “Old Contemptible” soldier who joined the regular army 2nd Notts & Derby Regt “The Sherwood Forresters” on 14th July 1904. He therefore had just over ten years service prior to the declaration of war in August 1914. He and his comrades were shipped to France on 8th September 1914. William fought at Battle of La Bassee & was seriously wounded later in the war by “Gun Shot Wounds to Neck and Chest” He was Honourably Discharged on 17th July 1917, as being no longer fit for military service.
