Rifleman Frederick Gentry was born in LIVERPOOL and later lived in Bow, (Leytonstone) London where he joined Kitchener's New Army in late 1914. He initially served with 13th Bn KRRC with which unit he landed in Boulogne, France on 30th July 1915.
He sailed on S.S. SERVIAL from Folkstone as part of a total force of 998 men and 31 officers. Later in 1916 after the shocking losses during The Battle of The Somme he is then seen joining the strength of 21st KRRC (Yeoman Rifles) as did so many of the Londoners of the earlier arriving KRRC battalions who were drafted into the unit to make up the numbers.
After a brief period in France with the 21st KRRC the unit was posted to Italy in November 1916. They then returned to France in early 1917 where the unit fought in The Battle of The Dunes (10th July 1917).This is almost certainly the action for which the young Fred Gentry, then aged just 19 won his Military Medal.
Private Gentry is then seen transfered as L/Cpl 143816 to service with the newly formed 41st MGC (Infantry) when 21st KRRC is disbanded on 16th March 1918. The new MGC unit was heavily involved with the German Spring Offensive in Belgium where L/Cpl Gentry was sadly Killed in Action on 28th April 1918 (probably at Mount Kemmel) during 4th Ypres,The Battle of Lys (9th -29th April 1918). He was just 20 years old.
The Son of Mrs M.A. GENTRY of 170 CROWNFIELD ROAD, LEYTONSTONE.
