(1914-15 Trio)
This is a sad story of the terrible family loss of two young Long Eaton lads in the brutal fighting at Loos in late 1915.
Both these lads were born at Ilkeston and enlisted in Nottingham.
The family home was at 4 Oxford Street, Long Eaton and their parents were,
Mr Arthur William Beardsley and Mrs Maria Beardsley.
Harold landed in France on 9th September and James two days later on the 11th September. Young Harold's war lasted only 18 days as he was killed in action on 27th September.
He was just 19.
James faired even worse. His war lasted only 14 days, being seriously wounded on 25th and dying of his wounds three days later on the 28th.
He was only 21.
Harold has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Loos Memorial To The Missing at Dud Corner Cemetery. He is further remembered by inscription on the lower half of his brother James' gravestone which is in Lilliers Communal Cemetery. Plot IV, Row B, Grave 17.
Both Brothers are also commemorated on Ilkeston War Memorial.
A poignant reminder of the true cost of World War One.
