An interesting soldier with previous service as:
 "15315 Pte A.Thompson. Grenadier Guards"

1914 Star & Bar (Single) 1st & 2nd NOTTS & DERBY REGT.
11849. Pte.Albert Thompson. KILLED-IN-ACTION 5th July 1916 during the final attack on LA BOISELLE. ( Somme )    Albert Thompson's MIC and hence his 1914 Star are shown as 2nd Batallion Notts & Derby Regt, but the CWG site clearly records him as 1st Batallion.

A leading regimental history site also records him as being Killed In Action with 1st Battalion.
His MIC states a disembarkation on 8th September 1914 which is roughly correct for the 2nd Battalion which has a recorded arrival date in France (St Nazaire) of 11th September 1914. (1st Batt, didn't arrive in theatre until 5th November 1914 at Le Havre having been in India at the start of the war.)
According to the medal rolls he joined the 2nd Batt' and transferred to the 1st Batt' with which he was killed on 5th July 1915 LA BOISELLE during the opening days of the campaign 1st - 6th July 1916.

This small French village was the scene of some of the most fierce fighting on the Somme. My own Great Uncle. (1107, Pte, John.W.Camplin, 10th Lincolnshire Regt (Our home page soldier) was himself killed in action on 1st July just a few yards from where Albert Thompson lost his life.

The Notts & Derby Regt, also lost a large number of men during the subsequent attacks which led to the final capture of the village on 6th July. The heavy shelling and severe hand to and fighting which took place for several hours at La Boiselle on the evening of 5th July sadly claimed the life of Albert Thompson who has no known grave and is commemorated on The Theipval Memorial to the missing and on The Morton Village Memorial. Albert Thompson was born in Shirland, Derbyshire, resided in Alfreton and enlisted in Chesterfield. He was the son of Mrs C. Fritchley of Town Street, Shirland, Alfreton.
