Wilfred Gerald Sullock was born in Cardiff in 1891 and prior to joining the army had been a Coal Miner (Hewer). One of nine children, he was a single man. He departed for Zeebrugge France with 1st Royal Welch Fusiliers on 6th October 1914. The Division landed at Zeebrugge on the 7th of October 1914, planning to assist in the defence of Antwerp, but they arrived too late prevent the fall of the city and took up defensive positions at important bridges and junctions to aid in the retreat of the Belgian army. The 7th Division then became the first British Troops to entrench in front of Ypres, suffering extremely heavy losses and prisoners in the The First Battle of Ypres.
Wilfred Sullock was one of those men captured.

[Operations Log: Sortie to Aachen]
LANCASTER Mk I . DV389. SR-X
Take off from Ludford Magna on ABC duties (Airbourne Cigar Duties), Lancaster, X for X-Ray crashed at OLZHEIM, 10km NNE of PRUM.
The entire crew of eight were lost in this incident and are remembered with honour at Rheinberg War Cemetery, Germany.
[HISTORY]
101 Squadron was during this period based in Ludford Magna, Lincolnshire and used secret new equipment designed to jam the VHF frequencies used by Luftwaffe fighter controllers.
This clever system was initiated in June 1943 and was code-named "Airborne Cigar" or ABC for short. It was operated by a specialist eighth crew member, known as the "Special Operator", on board the Lancaster.
This was a person who could understand German and listen into the German controller's transmissions, jamming them before they alerted their night fighters to the position of the bombers.
ABC soon proved to be a very valuable aid and from October 1943, 101 Squadron ABC aircraft flew with all Bomber Command main force attacks. Consequently, however, 101 Squadron suffered higher losses than any other 1 Group Squadron and was, therefore, outfitted with twin 0.5 Browning Machine Guns in the rear turret.

'We feel that this family assembly well highlights the personal struggles endured and sacrifices made by many British families during the two World Wars'.
Worthy of much further research
