From Knottingley, Pontefract, Yorkshire.[HISTORY OF THE ACTION]On the 1st March 1943 the 1st Battalion Irish Guards embarked for North Africa and formed part of the 1st Army. They suffered very heavy casualties but it was during this campaign that Lance Corporal Kenneally won his Victoria Cross.
From North Africa the 1st Battalion moved across to Italy and took part in the particularly bitter fighting in the Anzio beach head where casualties were again very heavy. 1st Irish Guards had been heavily involved with an attempted push up the Albano Road toward the factory area and had met with fierce enemy resistance from the 65th German infantry who had support from a few tanks & some armoured vehicles. It was during this fierce fighting with the Germans at the Campoleone Salient that James Booth gave his life. James Booth is remembered with eternal honour at:ANZIO WAR CEMETERY. IV.X.I.
