[BIOGRAPHY]
Melvyn Wynn Edwards was born in Colwyn Bay, North Wales in
1962. His first experience of war was literally a baptism by fire as he and his comrades of the Welsh Guards were aboard Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship SIR GALAHAD when it was targeted by aircraft of the Argentinian Air Force while at anchor in Bluff Cove in the Falkland Islands.
[THE BLUFF COVE ATTACK. 8th JUNE 1982]
At about 2:00pm local time on 8th June 1982, a flight of A-4 Skyhawk fighter bombers of the Argentinian Air Force attacked the Sir Galahad and the Tristram while both were at anchor in Bluff Cove. Members of the Welsh Guards including Guardsman M.W. Edwards were awaiting disembarkation from Sir Galahad to assist 2nd Parachute Regt, but before they could vacate the ship it was hit by three bombs which ignited a major fire.
The casualties on the ship were horrendous with 48 Welsh Guardsmen killed and 150 seriously wounded and burned.
Many of these men were comrades of Melvyn Edwards including the now famous personality, Guardsman Simon Weston, who's story of great valour against all odds in overcoming his terrible burns has inspired the world and has passed into British & international legend.
[LATER SERVICE] Lance Sergeant Edwards later served in multiple tours of Northern Ireland during the troubles and toward the end of his service with the Military Provost Guard Service.
He was awarded the Queen's Golden & Diamond Jubilee medals in 2002 and 2012 and an Accumulated Campaign Service Medal (1994).
His group is superbly finished by a "Regular Army" L.S.G.C. with a very rare & seldom seen [Second Award Bar] which together represent a total of 25 years service.
An Exceptional Welsh Guards Group Worthy of The Finest Collection.
