Donald Noble-Thompson was born in Scotland in 1956.
He died suddenly on 20th November 2004 aged 48 at his home in Kilcreggan.
He initially enlisted in the British Army as an Assault Engineer at age 22 on 9th August 1978. During his basic training he decided that he wanted to join the Parachute Regiment. After completing PARA Depot he was then posted to 2 PARA. He undertook an operational tour in Northern Ireland in 1981 before deploying with the battalion to The Falkland Islands on Operation CORPORATE in April 1982.

On return to the U.K. he took part in various training exercises in Belize & Canada before returning to the Falklands in January 1985 for a six month tour. From 1986 to 1988 he served in Hong Kong before returning to Northern Ireland in April 1989 as an Army Air Corps Air Observer based at Middle Wallop.

Don left the Army in August 1990 at the end of his 12 year engagement and he went on to start a new career on oil rigs where he employed his air movements & logistics experience.

He was an inspirational man, who had a lasting effect on all those who met him. His love of pipe music saw him take the position of Chairman of the Argyle & Bute Peninsula Pope Band. He also assisted regularly with the Scouts. He will be remembered for his excellent sense of humour, and his selfless approach to people. He will be sadly missed.

In the 1970s, the battalion was sent to Northern Ireland as part of Operation Banner for the first of many tours during the troubles.
In 1982, the 2nd Battalion Parachute Regiment commanded by LT COLONEL H. JONES V.C. entered British military history when it formed a critical part of the crack force sent to the South Atlantic in Operation Corporate, as part of 3 Commando Brigade during the Falklands War.
The men of 2PARA again made history when they became the first troops from the main assault body to make an amphibious landing on the Falkland Islands when they came ashore at San Carlos Water (codename: Blue Beach).

The battalion was the only unit to fight two battles during the Falklands War.

The first action was at The Battle of Goose Green on 28 May 1982 where 2PARA’s Commanding Officer, Lt Colonel H. Jones, won a posthumous Victoria Cross when he was killed in action while personally leading an attack on an Argentinian machine gun position.
This was quickly followed by 2PARA’s participation at The Battle of Wireless Ridge which took place on the last night of the conflict and ended in the collapse of the Argentine Army...and the subsequent recapture of Port Stanley.
