[BIOGRAPHY] - (circa 1830-1855) (Age 25)
Daniel Carey, who’s name is variously spelt on the rolls as Carey Carrey or on the medal as Carroy, was a Scotsman from Ary who was born in about 1830. Prior to enlistment in Ireland on 18th April 1848 at about age 18 as Private 2506, he was described as a Calic Painter.
[SERVICE RECORD] 1848-1855
He served in training in Ireland for three years from 18th April 1848 until 3rd March 1851 when he’s seen on board ship until 29th March en-route to Corfu, Greece.
He’s seen “in cells” between 2nd-8th March 1852 having received “7 days” for some unknown misdemeanour.
From 1st April 1853 he’s then recorded as being at Gibraltar & Turkey where exactly one year later on 1st April 1854 - 30th June he’s seen volunteering for 30th Regiment of Foot as Pte 3856.
From 1st July 1854 he’s seen as serving in Bulgaria & Crimea where
fought at both the battles of Alma & Balaclava.
Daniel was sadly KILLED IN ACTION during the Seige of Sebastopol on 11th April 1855.

Daniel is recorded as being among six men killed on 11th April.
He was the only casualty from his unit on this day.
