On 3 June 1816 W.W. POLE The Master of the Royal Mint announced that Waterloo Medals were to be struck and named at his own personal expense and given as gifts to a very select list of important dignitaries and national institutions.

The list below contains the names of 30 recipients which included H.R.H. The Commander-in-Chief and that of the Rt. Hon. Charles Bathurst who was then a Cabinet Minister in the Addington government.

A UNIQUE & HIGHLY IMPORTANT "MASTER OF ROYAL MINT"  GIFT WATERLOO MEDAL. OFFICIALLY IMPRESSED "THE MASTER OF THE MINT TO THE RT. HON. C. BATHURST" ONE OF ONLY 30 "OFFICIAL GIFT" MEDALS Born as Charles Bragge in 1754, Bathurst was the son of Charles Bragge Snr, of Cleve Hill in Gloucestershire, and his wife Anne Bathurst, the granddaughter of Sir Benjamin Bathurst, younger brother of Allen Bathurst, 1st Earl Bathurst. He was educated at the University of Oxford. In 1804 he adopted his mother's surname by Royal license in lieu of Bragge.

Charles Bathurst, was a member of parliament & represented several different constituencies during the 33 years from 1790 to 1823.

Monmouth from 1790 to 1796.
Bristol from 1796 to 1812.
Bodmin from 1812 to 1818.
Harwich from 1818 to 1823.

BATHURST" ONE OF ONLY 30 "OFFICIAL GIFT" MEDALS He was invested a member of the Privy Council in 1801 and served in the cabinet of Prime Minister Henry Addington as The Treasurer of the Navy from 1801 to 1803 and as The Secretary of War from 1803 to 1804.

He served under the Duke of Portland and Spencer Perceval as Master of the Royal Mint from 1806 to 1810 and under Prime Minister Lord Liverpool as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from 1812 to 1823.

In 1781 at the age of 27 he had married Charlotte Addington, the daughter of Anthony Addington the prime minister's brother.
Their marriage produced 2 sons and 2 daughters. He was succeeded in turn by their eldest son Charles and their younger son, Reverend William Hiley Bathurst who became the grandfather of Charles Bathurst 1st Viscount Bredisloe . Wife Charlotte survived him by eight years and died in May 1839.

He died on 13 August 1831 age 77.
